[01].Putumayo Presents: Acoustic Africa
Every so often, an album comes along that reminds us why we are so moved by song: the melody, the rhythm, and the message. Putumayo has presented a variety of world music CDs, but African music has been the consistent heart and soul of its offerings. Putumayo World Music is pleased to present Acoustic Africa, a captivating collection showcasing some of Africa’s greatest singer-songwriters in beautifully stripped down displays of acoustic mastery. These artists are helping to spearhead an acoustic revolution in stark contrast to the studio-based, synthesized dance music that became the standard for African pop-stars of the 1980’s and 90’s. On Acoustic Africa, you’ll discover gentle folk songs from Senegal, a protest song from South Africa, blues-tinged ballads from Mali and much more.

[02].Putumayo Presents: North African Groove
With the Mediterranean Sea to the north and the Sahara Desert to the south, North Africa serves as a crossroad between many cultures. The Atlantic coast of Morocco forms the Western boundary of North Africa and the Suez Canal in Egypt its eastern end. Most of North Africa is known as the Maghreb and includes the countries of Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia and Libya. Egypt, which is generally considered part of the Middle East, is geographically part of North Africa. Echoes of ancient history can still be heard in the rhythms and melodies of North Africa’s popular music. While electronic drum beats, disco and funk-inspired grooves, hip-hop and other Western influences are clearly apparent in the modern music of the region, traditional instrumentation, singing techniques and melodies play an important role in defining the local sound. The two best known types of popular music from North Africa are raï and al-jil. Raï means "opinion" in Arabic, and it developed in the Algerian port city of Oran in the 1950s and 60s. Raï is the North African equivalent of rock and roll and is now popular throughout the Maghreb and in Arabic communities around the world. Al-jil is Egyptian party music. While raï and al-jil still form the core of popular North African music, Moroccan Gnawa trance, Touareg blues, Berber folk and Afro-Nubian rhythms are some of the exotic local flavors that have influenced the region’s music. In recent years, the French cities of Paris and Marseilles have become important production centers for North African music, and many popular artists are beginning to create songs that target their own communities as well as a wider French market. Meanwhile, European DJs and producers have collaborated with artists from the region, and the influences of electronica and European club music are ever more evident.

From African salsa to Cuban son, Afro-Latin Party is a non-stop celebration of the Latin sounds heard in nightclubs from Dakar to Havana. Croatian salsa, Cuban ska, and Oregonian mambo!?!? These are three of the unlikely gems listeners will find on Afro-Latin Party. What started out as an effort to provide the perfect soundtrack to a Latin dance party became a tribute to the global appreciation and realization of the musical ricochet between Cuba and Africa. Even with all the geographic and era crisscrossing on the album, at its core Afro-Latin Party is still a dance record beckoning party-goers to traverse the planet while they navigate the dance-floor.

[05].Putumayo Presents: Women of Africa
A celebration of soulful and inspirational music by female artists from across Africa. Women have always played an essential role in the preservation of African culture. From lullabies sung to sleepy children to chants of celebration, women are important bearers of tradition. Unlike some areas in the world where females are discouraged from taking part in public musical performance, in sub-Saharan Africa, music is an essential social activity for all members of the community. While many musical instruments are traditionally played exclusively by men, women often provide the voice of Africa's music. This legacy carries over from traditional to contemporary music, and many of today's most popular singers in Africa are women.

[10].Putumayo Presents: Congo To Cuba
An Afro-Latino musical odyssey from Africa to Cuba and back again. A musical reunion between the irresistible swing of Cuban son and the soul of West African salsa, Putumayo's Congo to Cuba is a memorable collection of Afro-Latin grooves. Inspired by the critical and commercial success of the Putumayo compilations Afro-Latino and Mali to Memphis we've gone back to the archives to uncover some classic and contemporary gems of Cuban music and Cuban-influenced African music. Congo to Cuba reveals the deep cultural connections between these two distant worlds. Congo to Cuba is a celebration of the ways in which music has helped keep the African-Cuban connection vibrant over the years. It features a number of the classic Latin recordings that were popular in Africa, as well as work by African artists who pay tribute to the Afro-Cuban sound. While time and distance may keep them apart, common heritage and family ties between West Africa and Cuba have provided a bond that can never be broken. The music on Congo to Cuba is a powerful and thoroughly enjoyable testament to the unifying nature of music.

A mesmerizing journey through the lyrical, acoustic music of Africa. Putumayo returns to Africa with African Odyssey, an entrancing expedition through the beautiful acoustic music of this diverse continent. From the haunting melodies of Mali to the lyrical Portuguese-influenced songs of Guinea-Bissau, African Odyssey is a voyage of discovery. It uncovers a number of artists whose music has never been heard outside of their borders as well as voices who are just beginning to be featured on the international stage. Meditative and reflective, yet overflowing with soul and spirit, the music on African Odyssey is a mesmerizing journey through this rich and varied region. The music of Africa is recognized worldwide for its complex rhythms and upbeat dance styles. The predominant image of African music is that of drumming and percussion, and indeed much of the rhythmic elements of contemporary popular music throughout the Western world have roots in the rhythms of Africa. Africa is also a tremendous source of beautiful, melodic music with a slower, more introspective flavor. For African Odyssey Putumayo has selected 10 beautiful songs from 7 different countries that reveal a melodic side of African music that is often overlooked.

[14].Putumayo Presents: Cape Verde
The remote Cape Verde islands offer a unique and exquisite blend of music with influences from Africa, Portugal and Brazil. Many of us first heard about Cape Verde through the exquisite voice of Cesaria Evora. Over the past few years, some of the favorite songs on our collections have come from talented Cape Verdean artists. Not only are they starkly beautiful islands, but they are home to one of the world's greatest musical treasure troves. Brazilian and Cape Verdean music share a common Portuguese heritage. And since these rocky isolated islands are located 300 miles off the coast of Senegal in West Africa, the African influence is also very strong. Cape Verde offers a musical bounty similar in feel to the Brasileiro collection, but with something mysterious and evocative that can only be traced to the romance of these remote and exotic islands.

[17].Putumayo Presents: Mali to Memphis: An African American Odyssey
Africa and America are united on this revealing journey that traces the route of the blues. Mali to Memphis is a journey from the heart of an ancient West African kingdom to a city where American black music came into its own, from the sandy banks of the Niger River to the levees of the Mississippi. These songs do not unlock the secrets of Delta blues or Malian spirit music. But there is a kinship between these musicians, and their art reveals that fact in loud, living, present-tense terms, even as it invites us to contemplate the unsolvable riddles of the past. Mali is an enormous, landlocked country that fills the interior of West Africa. It stretches from the Sahara desert in the north, to the edge of the coastal rain forests in the south. The country's biggest waterway, the Niger River, winds its way northward from Guinea, through the Malian capital, Bamako. It continues up to Segu, center of the old Bambara Empire and ancestral home to many artists on this compilation, and then on to Timbuktu at the edge of the Sahara.

[18].Putumayo Presents: Oliver Mtukudzi - Tuku Music
While Oliver Mtukudzi--also know as Tuku--has always been revered in his home of Zimbabwe, he has been overshadowed in the American "world music" scene by revolutionary poet Thomas Mapfumo and the pop-party Bhundu Boys. His music is more romantic and bluesy than Mapfumo's, focusing on the grit of life rather than the broader cosmology. He's Ray Charles and Otis Redding to Mapfumo's Bob Marley and Bob Dylan. His voice is gruff but sweet; it implores rather than demands. The music that he creates to carry a song is often light as air, creating a beautiful tension between content and container. Mtukudzi's music has appeared on many compilations over the years, but this is the first full album of Tuku's music to be released in the U.S. It's a gem, with its shimmering guitars; its gentle, insistent bass lines; and a voice that will charm and challenge the listener. --Louis Gibson

[19].Putumayo Presents: Best of World Music: African
The Putumayo clothing chain had just branched out into the music business when this album was released. The tunes give an accurate overview of where African pop music was then and it wasn't entirely a pretty picture. The studio ruled and overuse of drum machines and synthesizers was commonplace. Reggae was the catchall rhythm, used whenever all else failed or a filler tune was needed in a big hurry. Of course, any compilation from the early '90s must reflect these weaknesses, but there was also a high-spirited club scene where drunken, sweaty, multicultural mobs would dance the night away. This album brings on nostalgia for a time when style overwhelmed substance and unashamed triviality and excess were the fashion. The pendulum has since swung in the direction of organic sounds, played on real instruments. This is obviously an enormous improvement, but why isn't anybody having fun anymore? --Christina Roden

Asian Dreamland offers soothing and musically intriguing songs from countries as diverse as Japan, China, India and even the Siberian republic of Tatarstan. This harmonious collection of tranquil songs is perfect for yoga and meditation, as well as putting the little ones to sleep. Performers include leading artists whose work represents modern interpretations of ancient traditions, such as Shang Shang Typhoon (Japan), the Yoshida Brothers (Japan), Ali Akbar Khan (India), and Lei Qiang (China), as well as lesser known artists such as Kelsang Chukie Tethong , who performs a Tibetan chant, and Zulya (Tatarsan). One can also hear unusual instruments ranging from the armisen, a three-stringed instrument similar to a banjo that came to Japan from China many centuries ago, to the erhu, an ancient Chinese instrument whose origins go back more than a thousand years, and the sarode, an Indian instrument that is similar to the violin. A portion of Putumayo's proceeds from the sale of Asian Dreamland will be donated to Worldwide Orphans Foundation in support of their efforts to enrich the lives and enhance the wellbeing of children living in orphanages throughout Asia and the rest of the world.

Asian traditions meet contemporary funk, electronica and soul for a musical masala that will spice up any celebration. Putumayo continues its exploration of new directions in world music with Asian Groove, a collection of contemporary songs that owe as much to Bollywood (Indian) film music as they do classic funk, reggae, hip-hop, and electronica. Asian Groove features the latest flavors in bhangra, Indian pop, and cross-cultural fusions that blend East and West. The latest installment in Putumayo's Groove Series follows in the footsteps of the critically acclaimed, best-selling Putumayo albums Arabic Groove and Latin Groove. The common denominator with all of the tracks on Asian Groove is their funkiness. Most have strong influences from R&B, soul, funk, hip-hop and other contemporary urban flavors. As with previous albums in our Groove Series (Arabic Groove and Latin Groove), the tracks on Asian Groove are intended to celebrate the fun, upbeat, cross-cultural innovations of modern world music.

[01].Putumayo Presents: Blues Around the World
From Buenos Aires to Barcelona, Mississippi to Mauritania this collection documents the trials and tribulations expressed through the blues from a global perspective. Despite language or lyrics, nationality or ethnicity, the blues speak to everyone. Highlight performances include The Unseen Guest, who formed when an Irish musician traveled to southern India and began playing on the streets accompanied by a tabla-toting native. Big Mama, who you might think must be from the Mississippi Delta, but she’ll demonstrate that you can live in Barcelona and still know how to sing the blues. Spain’s Jarabe de Palo contributes "La Flaca" ("The Skinny Girl"), which was a huge hit in Spain and Latin America. The legendary Bonnie Raitt is featured with longtime friend, Malian musician Habib Koité on "Back Around " from her 2003 album Silver Lining. From Mauritania, Amar Sundy demonstrates the kinship between West African music and the blues. Eric Bibb, Rory Block and Maria Muldaur are no strangers to the blues. This trio of friends grew up together in New York City’s Greenwich Village during the turbulent 1960’s and incorporates the spiritual side of the blues on "Don’t Ever Let Nobody Drag Your Spirit Down." Taj Mahal partners with The Culture Musical Club of Zanzibar to weave a narrative of melody and rhythm on "Catfish Blues." The Brazilian blues group Blues Et?licos brings their unique Brazilian-flavored blues to the table. Recognizing the blues was born in the Mississippi Delta Otis Spann, who played piano in Muddy Waters’ band for more than 20 years, belts out "I Got a Feeling".

[05].Putumayo Presents: Louisiana Gumbo
The spirit of a Louisiana captured in sizzling soul, blues and R&B. Marshes and bayous mark the landscape in the Mississippi Delta. This humid, fecund setting has acted like a cultural petri dish, as African, Caribbean, French, and Spanish have fused and transformed into one of the most culturally rich and unique regions of the United States. Louisiana Gumbo focuses on the soul, R&B and blues that has served as a foundation for much of America's popular music today. This collection is called Louisiana Gumbo because this Creole stew is a perfect metaphor for the blend of musical elements found in the music of Louisiana.

[05].Putumayo Presents: Brasileiro
Features extraordinary artists from Brazil on a tour of samba, bossa nova, and beyond. The music on this CD offers just a taste of the Brazilian musical feast. Some of the artists are huge stars in Brazil. Others are little known. The title of this collection, Brasileiro, means simply "Brazilian." It is a tribute to a people whose musical passion and creativity are unsurpassed. Music is more than just entertainment in Brazil. It is the soundtrack to life, a constant ambiance of rhythm and melody that enriches and supports the people through good times and bad. Carnaval, the bustling bacchanal every February, is an eruption of musical activity, but throughout the year the rhythms of samba, bossa nova, MPB (musica popular brasileira), forro, pagode and countless other styles are constantly in the air. They flow from the stereos of taxis, rural boom boxes, the rusty speakers of beachside cantinas and live, impromptu jam sessions on street corners. Brasileiro captures this ambiance and brings it into your home.

[05].Putumayo Presents: Jamaica
Legendary reggae artists offer a compelling overview of one of the world's most popular music styles. Putumayo visits Jamaica, the homeland of reggae music and mythical artists such as Jimmy Cliff, Peter Tosh, Black Uhuru and Toots & the Maytals. With roots in African tradition and influences from American Rhythm & Blues, Motown, soul and other popular music styles, reggae has taken the world by storm with its irresistible beat and powerful messages. Jamaica celebrates the joy of reggae with this collection of classic and new tracks by some of reggae's greatest voices. One of the most popular and influential music forms of the 20th century, reggae has traveled the world spreading its message of social and spiritual awareness. Reggae's popularity comes partially from its image and the power of its lyrics; but at its heart it is good time music, with a laid-back, funky beat that keeps your feet moving and your head bobbing. Reggae has traveled the world and found proponents in Africa, Europe and beyond, and is one of the most popular music forms anywhere. Putumayo invites you to return to reggae's roots with this collection of tracks by legends and discoveries from the land where reggae began. Jamaica features informative liner notes written by reggae critic Mark Gorney, enhanced with David Corio's artist photographs and pictures of the Jamaican landscape and architecture provided by Lonely Planet.

[06].Putumayo Presents: Puerto Rico
Exhilarating bomba, plena, salsa and son from The Island of Enchantment. Putumayo World Music is pleased to present Puerto Rico, a collection of entertaining songs from an island where music is an essential element of daily life. Puerto Rico follows the well-received Putumayo collections Cuba and Republica Dominicana and completes a trilogy of the music of the Spanish Caribbean. In recent years, Puerto Rican musicians such as Ricky Martin, Marc Anthony and Jennifer Lopez have been at the forefront of the Latin pop music boom. These artists would be the first to acknowledge that the traditional music of their homeland is at the core of their radio-friendly crossover hits. All grew up listening to Puerto Rican traditional styles like bomba, plena and musica jibara (country music), not to mention the urban grooves of salsa. Ricky Martin, for example, often ends his shows with a guest appearance from a plena ensemble, and the rhythms and melodies of the Isla del Encanto (Island of Enchantment) are fast becoming part of the mainstream. Cuba and Puerto Rico are often described as "two wings of the same bird," and this is certainly evident in their music. The songs and rhythms of both islands are irresistible, danceable and soulful and have influenced many forms of contemporary popular music and jazz. While the Cuban son has recently taken flight on a gust of international popularity, Puerto Rican traditional music is an equally important element of the Latin music boom.

[09].Putumayo Presents: Cuba
The beautiful melodies and exotic rhythms of Cuban son are guaranteed to have you dancing the night away. The music of Cuba developed from a unique set of historical and social circumstances. African slaves, brought to work on the Spanish sugar plantations, soon outnumbered the European colonists. The attitude of the Spanish political and religious institutions towards African culture, while undeniably oppressive, was more open than in some other colonial societies. Catholic priests did their best to convert the Africans to Christianity, but they overlooked their worship of African deities as long as they gave them Christian names. In fact, santeria, a religion that combines Catholicism with African deities and rituals, is still a key part of Cuban spiritual life. Most of the songs on this collection are a style called son, (lit. "sound") one of the most popular and influential Cuban musical forms. Son developed around the turn of the century in Oriente, a region in eastern Cuba. Migrating musicians brought son west to Havana in the 1920s, where it exploded in popularity. The fundamental element of the son is a rhythmic pattern called clave (lit. "key"). Played on two wooden sticks, called claves, this repetitive beat is the foundation upon which all of the other musical elements are structured. It gives son the propulsive swing that has endeared it to people around the world. Most contemporary salsa is based on son.
